Classifying information
=======================
One important feature of hypertext is the organization of ideas in
the covered material into logical classification schemes or
taxonomies. Good classification schemes tend to have:
- 4-6 subcategories at every level <jump>
- exceptions to the classification are hard to find <jump>
- subtopics all show clear commonalities and boundaries <jump>
- subtopics are ordered by size or importance <jump>
- many ways to reach the same information <jump>
- most files are single screen in size (22 lines max) <jump>
Besides being the menus for reaching the desired material and
because such classification schemes also clearly show relationships
between ideas, they become the metaphor (or thought patterns)
adopted by users whenever thinking about the contained material.
